04:22 pm: The oddest thing happened today
We drive small cars.  Our cars of choice are always 4-cylinders, maybe a wagon or a hatchback, but certainly little cars by the standards of today's behemoths.

Today I came out of Byerly's and looked down the aisle to see if I could see my little Ford Focus hatchback.

My gosh, it was there in the middle of the row and it was the biggest danged thing there!

No kidding; compared to the tiny cars lined up next to it its little tiny hatch stuck out like an SUV.

First time for everything, I guess...

10:46 pm: Well.
Today was mostly about my cousin's daughter's wedding.  The ceremony was at 3:30 at the Chapel of the Holy Spirit at Breck school, and it was very nice.  The reception was at 5:30 at the Mpls. Country Club; open bar, waiters circulating with wine and hors d'ouvres.

The dining hall was extremely noisy.  It was very difficult to converse and G was actively miserable.  Dinner was mixed vegetables, a potato galette, and a beef tenderloin steak and a chicken cutlet.  Yes.  Both.  For everyone.

We had to bail after the cake and coffee, even though they were clearing a floor for dancing.  On the way out, we were required to have our photos taken in a photo booth; mine came out terrible, though one of G's was OK.  I didn't see Mom's, she said she hated hers, too.  No, you can't see mine.

Home now, resting and recuperating.  Church tomorrow, then lunch with Tom.  Monday, I take Mom out to Plymouth to visit with her sisters-in-law.

Night, all.

09:39 pm: Tom's getting a group home!!!
We heard yesterday that the company that wants to organize a group home which will include my son actually has a real estate *contract* and will close on August 15 with the young men moving in on August 18.

T has been in a crisis placement almost all year as his meds failed in his previous group home and his habit of targeting one housemate persisted even after the meds got sorted, so he's been in a kind of limbo without some of his favorite things because the crisis placement isn't really set up for long term residency.

So, on August 18 he will move into a house that's supposed to be a permanent home and I can start talking to school districts!

Better yet, one of the guys in his crisis placement (with whom he gets on very well) is going to the same group home, and another resident will be a guy Tom went to middle school and part of high school with.  So cool!

04:43 pm: Here's the word:

[info]mdlbearhas written with great eloquence here about why we need to vote Democratic in the fall.  Though I probably won't change anyone's mind, I need to pass this along.  If you think there is no difference between Republicans and Democrats, if you think that you should vote for a third candidate because the Democrat doesn't exactly suit you, please think again.  This country used to work better; we need to take it back before it's too late.

No, I don't think it's too late.

09:12 pm: A week of weaving
It's been a busy week.

Next Thursday my mom is coming to visit.  I've been clearing out the bedroom she's staying in, which involves going through a lot of stuff that got stuffed there.  In and among Tom's things from his old group home I found *all* of his picture symbols that he's supposed to use for communicating; kind of hard to use them when you don't have them, isn't it?  I am not pleased and will get them to his current placement this weekend.

06:09 pm: Convention Weekend
[info]gmcdavid has reported on our convention activities; he's a true geek and posts from his palmtop wherever he happens to be.

We did enjoy the convention very much.  I got a good night's sleep last night, as opposed to a very bad one the night before.  In spite of a lengthy Saturday nap and, recently, a lengthy Sunday one I am just exhausted, but that's to be expected.  I found a T-shirt that reads "CAT HERDER".  I am going to wear it to every remaining staff meeting while I am chief of staff, and then give it to my successor if it will fit them.

We had a nice chance to chat with friends, some of whom we don't see very often.  We spent a fair amount of time listening to music, and went to private room parties our friends gave on Friday and Saturday nights.  We no longer have stomach for the noise, heat, and hubub of public room parties.

We are thinking very seriously about going to Windycon this fall.  It will be the 30th anniversary of my first convention and our first convention together; we should really do *something* to celebrate our 30th anniversary, eh?

09:39 pm: Don't eat that! It's not dirty!
We've been hearing for some time now that too much sanitation is not such a good thing.  Without a healthy load, our immune systems can turn on themselves.  Meanwhile, constant exposure to antibacterials helps to breed "superbugs".

Nobody's saying that we need to bring back typhus, but here's more evidence that we've gone overboard.  Do not read this if you have a weak stomach; DO read this, though, if you have inflammatory bowel disease.

Worms are good for us!

The Flying Dutchman ain't got nothin' on me . . .

In the past 30 years I don't think I have been to a wedding without Glenn, and if I don't repeat it for another 30 years that will be just fine with me.  That was the only negative of the day, not having him right by my side when the couple said their vows and I was remembering our wedding so long ago and the long and happy life we've had together . . .

09:22 pm: WEAVING!!!!!
I am finally weaving my shaft-switching rug, otherwise known as The Weaving Project From Hell.  For two months I have been trying to get this project warped and set up, and today I did weave, and I did get colors to change according to the pattern.

There are still a few glitches, but nothing I can't work through.

10:10 am: What I did on my Wisconsin vacation
We had a wonderful time with [info]colgaffneyis at Pioneer Village this weekend.  J and I went out in one car and G in the other; we decided it was high time J camped with us again and three people plus kit will not fit in one car.  We left a little before five, assuming that the trailer would be leaving at about the same time.

In fact the trailer was there and unloaded by the time we pulled in.  We helped finish setup and the crew helped us set up our tent.  Another family now has an even larger, brand-new tent; you could put a trooper or a good-sized car, or our tent inside it . . .

We closed at 5:00 and tore down; between the timely close, a lot of cooperation packing the trailer, and the fact that it was midsommar weekend, it was still full light when we got home; tired, sore, and happy, but very pleased.
